AA Boxes
« on: August 07, 2006, 11:06:11 »
Just out of interest,as I mentioned in a posting.

Does anyone know how many, or where the surviving (wooden)  AA/RAC boxes are.

I know as in the liked post above that there's one on the A166 at the base of Garrowby Hill (to the east of York, in North Yorkshire)

The only other one I know of is on the 'summit' of the A591 between Grasmere & Thirlmere

However I've found a few on 'WebShots'
Cambus
Kirkstone Pass (not the same though)
Unidentified
Corwen (note the Post-Coach sign for the A5 to Holyhead)

Are there anymore around??

There's one just outside Brancaster on Norfolk coast. I commented on it a couple of weeks ago when we were up there. No pic I am afraid.

Cheers

:? Got me thinking now :?  its near either a National Trust or English Heritage site/hall/gardens. Its on the left coming from Leyburn towards Hawes. Go round a fairly tight right hand bend and start dropping down a hill and there it is tucked away near the hedge. Its been there for years - must admit I've not been up that way for a couple of years.

Its been in the local press just recently, a lady has been tending the garden bringing it back to its former glory. Her husband has also been repairing the box. BTW there is no phone in it. Yes it is on the left about four miles West of Leyburn along Wensleydale.

There is one on the A149 at Burnham / Staithe... (North Norfolk Coast Road)

Its Brianthesnails territory.... I've delivered 2 vans to the village in the past!

I think there's one on what was the A11 near Fourwentways but the A11 now bypasses it.
