Where to get a winch and what one?
« on: April 21, 2006, 12:39:53 »
As above for pulling the Disco out of the mud. Not extreme use and will be mounted under body with the rope going through the bottom vent in the bumper (already have the mount)

Thanks

Steve

You'll want about 8-9,000lbs then.  Go for a branded one if budget will allow, otherwise trawl E-Blag for some of the sub £200 bargains.

don't mind paying the extra for a decent model. But having never used one before. What is a decent model?

Id go for 9000lbs and warn or superwinch, both are good. T max also becoming popular. I dont think you can go far wrong with a superwinch ep9.

second that - the superwinch ep9, or ep9i - seems to be the best budget buy along with the warn tabor.

I'd steer clear of the T-Maxx ones - had one and the clutch kept sticking + solenoids didn't like water

Now got a superwinch EP9 - FANTASTIC, not skipped a beat yet and great value as comes with snatch block included in price

Also if you're going to use plasma rope then its brake is in the gearbox and not within the drum so heat generation in the drum is minimal - no melted rope !

go on you know you want one its gonna be expensive which ever way you go so go for quality rather than on price  i opted for warn 9.5 xp with no regrets have been using lots and lots since i got it ive  done 3 challenge events and used in other recovery situations  and to date has never let me down  its powered by a 6hp motor very strong and i run twin maxima deep cycle batteries wired in parallel i changed my solinoide as soon as got it and changed it to a waterproof albright which is now inside the engine bay near the bat 1 tray out off harms way keeping the cable from the albright to the winch as short as possible as this is where you will loose power to winch if cables are to long i also run twin batt monitor and have installed waterproof front control unit on the grill and have also in cab winch controls with saftey switch   do it right first time get the correct wiring and wash and clean regular aint let me down yet

Having used a Superwinch EP9i quite a lot over the last 18 months to drag my 110 and almost every other sort of 4x4 known to man (including Bulli  :D   ) out of all sorts of mire etc I can't fault them .............  never let me down yet and keeps on pulling

If it's in the budget though plasma rope is well worth it as well IMHO.

you could go for a Champion winch, i've heard they are very good and reliable at a good price.
Have a look on the website shown on the bottom of my post, mention mudclub and they will do you a very good price

hope this helps

Can't praise the Warn 9.5 xp enough, not cheap but a quality bit of kit

Colin, have you got any details of how you wired the in-cab controls? Very tempted to do mine too as getting out to plug the controller in isn't always pratical

There was a pole on this recently with over half of us reporting we had the Warn, though I myself bought a Goodwinch from Dave Bowyer.  If you can get to a show, buy it there and get the best offer on the day, otherwise shop around.  I paid £600 for an EPi9 (I think) with back-rack detachable mount, plasma rope, wiring to front and rear, delivery etc.  fully comissioned and ready to use :)

OK, thanks for all the replies and for making this even harder.

I have found that I need a remote solenoid pack as the winch will be hidden and as such need power out as well as in

Narrowed down to:

Superwinch EP9 @ £440 delivered.

So, will this do the job or should I spend the extra £300 for a warn winch?

Thanks again

it will do the job.

if you want to pay an extra £400 or so for a warn then go for it - it probably wont do anything for you that the ep9 wont.

But what you will get that nice red trendy 'W' on the front that means quality performance and good parts availability etc....

Warn 8724s are meant to be the daddies, but it's up to you if you want to spend that much on a winch.

As the Winch will not be seen at all. (all that is seen is the fairland) I can't see how the warn will be £400 better.  The superwinch is only £440 and with the heritage show next weekend I may even get it cheaper.

So, it looks like its off to the shows for me.

I would suggest you check out the specs of each of these winches as well.

The EP9 has a more powerful motor, a faster line speed and draws less current per load than the warn.  In fact its the same story for the EP9 v X9 as well.

Makes me wonder why anyone would pay more for a winch which (on paper) seems to have poorer performance :?
