Vacumme (sp?) Diff lock actuator question

On the early RRC with vacumme (sp?) diff lock which side of the actuator does the pipe that engadges the diff lock go?

I'm going to repipe the 101 and the hoses are long since gone, perished and snapped away.

black pipe suplies the vacum,red pipe puts the difflock in & white puts it out,

on the racer it has a rangie box with a vacum actuator
it died so modified it with a bit o copper brake pipe,just got to connetct the hoses up when i want to put it in 4wd

They are colour coded? :shock:


I've spotted a red... and black...will have to clean it off to find the white.

It's just occured to me that the diff lock has no vaccume hence it's been literally on and off of it's own will , which is encouraging as at least it seems to work. I like the brake line idea as that will save the manifolds toasting it. Any idea what the bore of the pipe is for the rubber or what ever it is should be?

got no idea but a bit o standard copper brake pipe fits just nice inside the pipe

Ta Mike,

Much more use than the local landy place... least now I can go equipped with a bit of brake line to the local brakes and hoses gaff.

Also be able to knock up and emergency "Get out of Rutts free" card  :D

i use the brake pipe as a perminant fix as the switch is about £50

I've read that on the 101 ones once they are pulled appart they need a dab of grease in them which apparently seals them up again. It's the grease going dry that lets the switches leak apparently. Couple of 101 owners have done this to great effect. I just need some air tight pipes, then I'll know if the switch is goosed.

Copper brake pipe is a good idea, you'll find it's compatible with vacuum advance pipe, so rob that from any newish car or buy a length from a motor fators.  You'll find a nice long piece on a RRC as it uses vacuum to operate the heater recirculate flap :roll: , they also have a nice vacuum reservoir on the LH inner wing, spherical it is.

At a push you can use washer jet pipe but it does compress ans suffer from heat.

Been pulling yet more bits off Morph today (101 Ambi). Mainly the Diff lock
pipes (ala early Range rover vac operated) and the valve to operate it.

I've managed to replace the bits of pipe which were chaffed through along a
length of about 10 cm's.

On inspecting the vlave there is slight seapage of air around the case of
the valve it's self. I understand that this is normal and can be fixed with
a squirt of silicone grease. I have not actually got any to hand so will
have to find some. I've done a quick google... is this the stuff I need?

For a refreshing change the diff lock actuator so far seems to hold air ok.

A handy hint for any one playing with theses pipes, I found warming them up helpd to slide them over the brake line. A blow torch was too much but waving them in front of our central heating boilers exhaust did the job a treat. Usual advice about not breathing in the spent exhaust fumes applies though!
