« on: December 08, 2005, 18:41:29 »
I think I may have found my cheap disco I wanted. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4596346758&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1     and its only ...... 15 miles away!!!! What does everyone else think as its got MOT and a bit of tax so that may push the price up a bit but it is on for 500 quid no reserve so what do you all think. Cheers Tom

I dunno what you are wanting it for but the clunk on the gearbox as the auction says is a pretty standard thing, mine does it, its the shaft between the gearbox and transfer box.

Using oil would worry me but never sure about oil consumption with diesels.  A rev up once the engine is hot would tell you, look for smoke.

Be warned about the interior, its a Sonar Blue one and replacement bits in the colour are a sod to get hold of !

Plastic on seatbelt buckles is not an MOT failure unless they no longer latch.

Central locking broken, proberbly the drivers door sensor or a wire off.

I would also check rear floor, specially above the fuel tank and the seam at the back.  Swivel balls, look for lots of pitting on the chrome.  Also rear wheel arch corners (they collect mud), try pulling them see if they are still attached to  the body.  And its a bit difficult to tell but I think those are the horible tube steel steps that are fitted, they have a knack of rusting through right in the middle so collapse when stood on.

For £500 though you would expect to do some work.  I spent £1700 on mine (see below) its a V8 and I have spent very little money on it and its 3 years older than the one you are looking at.

bargain ! i paid £700 for mine on a 'G', 200 tdi 3 dr,needs a bit of tlc.mine needs the rear crossmember doing and a few bits and bobs,im gonna usemine for offroading and green laning, and ive found the members on here really helpful,i think its worth the money and they look better than the same 'REG' shoguns that are about.

i gave mine a test drive and used "ALL" the gears "ON " the road,to make sure they all worked well, and i did a few emergeny stops for the brake test, that nearly solved the crossmember problem too.shouldnt say that really.anyway
Good luck

The clonk will be the gearbox drive spline, and that'll need fixing.  It looks like quite a bargain, but I'd beware of buying it and then having to spend enough on it to get it working to justify the cost of a better one.

it looks like a no. I rang them up and they said that they weren't prepared to take less than 1500 for it which is well over the top in my view. The drivers seat is nakered and all the padding has been ripped off it the transmission is scrunchy going into second gear which I've heard is a common problem and it was bought and used as a vehicle to just use around the farm. The only thing is that they have put it on with no reserve and a starting bid of 500 quid so if nobody really wants it and someone puts in a bid of 500 quid then don't they have to sell it?? Can anyone confirm this, cheers Tom

1500 is ridiculous !

Bid 500 now, they cant remove it if it has bids and less than 12 hours to run and therefore according to ebay rules they are contractually abliged to sell it to you for your accepted bid.

Maybe I should explain a bit better.

If you bid 500 now, it has 3 days to run, they can cancel your bid and end the auction if they wish but only before it has 12 hours left.

If you bid 500 now and they try and cancel when theres less than 12 hours to go, they wont be able to and it will sell to the highest bidder.

Its definately not worth 1500.  I dont care what anyone says.  Since the disco 3 came out disco 1 prices have dropped a lot.  before the disco 3 came out I suppose 1500 would be more realistic.

Mine is in good condition for its age and I would expect to get just under 1500 for it now.

So when it has 12 and a half hours left on it and still nobodys bid and I put 500 quid in and then it goes to 11 hours left then they cannot delete my bid or remove the car from the auction and if the auction finishes with me as the winning bid then they have to sell the car to me. Is that right ??

12 hours or less - no bids - they can remove it
12 hours or less - any bids - they CANT remove it

more than 12 hours - bids or not - they can remove it with the option to sell to current highest bidder.

If you bid now, and they dont end it and you win, they are contractually obliged to sell it to you for your winning bid.

intresting, technically if you bid and they end the auction they have entered into a legally binding contract. You could go to small claims...more likely though is that if no one bids or it gets to, say, 800 and they end the auction it will have educated them. I used to sell motorbikes and people are often on drugs when it comes to the value of their bikes/cars. If he doesnt get bid maybe he will realise it isnt worth 1500 and sell it to you for a more sensible amount.

It went for 961 quid so I didn't bother I've been looking at some other 4x4's and am starting to look around for a rangie diesel to modify for off-roading. I found one in the back of the new land rover magazine with external rollcage and it had been bobtailed and had been made into a pick-up and had a 2.5 litre transit Di engine in it. They want £450 so I'm going to ring them up tomorrow and find out a bit more about it. Tom
