Dim Dip Unit
« on: July 12, 2005, 00:37:04 »
Range Rover Blues   Very spooky you mentioned the dim dip unit in your post about central locking actuators as that is my next job.

When I have my headlights on Dipped or Main the alternator light comes on.  I have had the alternator checked and its OK. If I Flash main beam its ok.  I can have eveything electrical switched on (except the headlights and no alternator light)

My bro in law (who is a electronics engineer) has had a look at the wiring diagrams and says bypass the dim dip unit so only the sidelights come on.  Does/have anyone come across this problem if so whats the solution.
Also how do I stand legally if I only have the sidelights working I presume the dim dip thingy is there for a reason

Dim-dip went out of fasion quite quickly.  Not sure where you stand on the law though, My Cav should have had it but was never fitted :?

Not sure why it's putting the alt light on either, have to think about that one.

I wish my dim dip circuit was not there, doing my head in trying to track down the circuit, tried every relay I can short of stripping the dash out, can't find a wiring diag for it either :x

For the RRC drop the bottom shrooud from the steering column, you don't have to pull the steering wheel like the manual says, remove it from the bottom first.  Under the RH end of the instruments are 2 screw heads on the black steel frame that supports the dash.  You have found it :D

Range Rover Blues directions were spot on thanks.  Dissconnected and there was no change to alternator light.  Looks like I am going to have to pay (gringe) a garage to sort as its got me beat.

Thats ok, I found it very challenging to work on my electrics, like a magical mystery tour, as if disco 1 wiring is bad enough this has that much extra redundant wiring going all over the place :?

Even a simple job is all testing and looking behind panels

Removing the dim-dip unit will not cause the car to fail the MOT, as both headlamps are fed from the one unit. Hence the car will still have a symetrical lighting layout ...

Incidentally, I've fited one (from an old Rangie) into my Disco.  Don't have to use headlamps in town traffic queues now - no more dazzling low-riding sports cars!!

I avoid using dim-dip as it's not that good for the bulbs but traffic is probably one of the intended uses for the system.
