Title: Range Rover Or Defender?
Post by: Landyman on January 09, 2012, 21:44:13
I've had my TD5 110 for just over a year now and I Keep looking at the price of L322 Range Rovers coming down to the point I think I could afford a nice 52 or 53 plate LPG or Diesel.
My Defender is very tidy and very fast and is without doubt the best Landy I've ever owned but I just don't get to off road it any more. Most of my off roading friends have all got normal family saloons so I'm wary of going anywhere alone.
I keep looking at these Range Rovers with their heated seats and electric everything and all for around the 10K price and think why am I driving a rattly old Defender when I could be cruising around in comfort.
Apart from the obvious depreciation with the range Rover what if any are the down falls of owning a 52 plate Range Rover?
Any thoughts or comments appreciated?

Just a thought,Ring a Land Rover main dealer and ask how much for a hours labour on a L322, If it frightens you, I think you will know which one to own. L322 are very capable cars but complicated when they go wrong. Just my thoughts. Let the floodgates open for a good debate.

Are they really still main dealer fix only? I would of thought that now they have been around for approx 10 years alot of independant garages should be able to tackle most things. Any thoughts?

I worked on l322 as an engineering manager , trust me the defender is the choice, go get  some nice 07my seats , set the doors so they close ,,ish, some new door seals and a good stereo, maybe a county interior and an of the the shelf cdl kit, youll be over the moon

Mines already got all that central locking leccy windows very nice seats not to mention uprated intercooler ashcroft discovery transferbox conversion and a tuning chip. Not much more I could do with it.
Looks like I'll be keeping the Defender for a bit longer.

One thing with a fender is you are less likely to get done for speeding than in a rangie, much less isolated from the world.

are you looking for comfort or ease of repair? The garage in my village can do most required work on the P38. How many miles do you drive a year? Finaly is your drive wide enough for a range rover (if i put mine up the side of the house i have to climb out the tailgate, can easily get out series drivers door with it parked there)?

My Defender is more than capable of getting into 3 digits on the speedo so points and a ban are available in both
I have done 14,000 miles in my defender in the last 12 months so the Range Rover will have to be LPG or deisel and whilst I was laughing about the parking thing as I know exactly what you mean its not a problem in my current house.  :cheesy:
