Title: It Was 50 Years Ago....
Post by: Bush Tucker Man on May 02, 2005, 11:56:21
When a stunning, beautiful, advanced car was launched.

They still draw attention wherever they go & apart from the mechanicals (engine & gearbox) it could be a concept car of the '90's.

In the first hour alone at the Motor-Show of its unveiling, the manufacturer took almost 750 deposits!, & almost 12,000 during the duration of the show!!

What was it?

It wasn't the Mustang, although that apparantley rivalled it on advance orders.

I'll reveal what it is when I log on tonight (probably after 22:30)

Just a quick visit.

MGA?
No.

We almost bought a Californian import to restore a while ago, but decided it was a bit much as a first time attempt. (that's the best bits)

I'd guess E-type Carrot, but I think they are not that old.

Hang on, it's not that funny Citroen is it, with the headlights that turn and stuff, the DS is it?

BTW, that MGB, about £10,000 worth done up and easier than using a heritage shell apparently.

Was it 1965 for the 'E'??

I can believe it, going by the MGA he'd also got, but he also had 'the money' to do everything

The 'Goddess', the one that Dan Dare ought to have driven?

Spot on Frank!!!

It's still a striking car, so advanced for its time.
I reckon that if it had been held in a design studio for 50years & then released (with a modern engine) it would still get the press clamouring to see it.

Still we bet it, to a certain extent, it never made it into the Louvre Art Gallery as an exhibit like the early 70's Range Rover :D

The E type was around in the early sixties, some MkIs pre-dated the A suffix to the registration.
As the for the DS being the most beutifull car in the wolrd, someone needs new glasses!
The E type for a start, the DB9, the MkII Jag, hell the MkII Escort was better looking and more reliable.

Now I never said 'most beautiful', that (in the mid 60's) goes to the AC Cobra 289 in my opinion.
Lithe, muscular(without being OTT - like the 427), awesome performance, wonderful sound, understated appearance.

No, you didn't say that, the website you linked to however.....

As for the AC, well, on my top 10 list for sure.  If you asked me what car I'd really want, I'd struggle.  If I could fill a garage with 10 cars then I'd be able to say after some thought what most of them would be.

How did you guess??

I live in a Victorian house (1899), love steam traction, but also love 'Art-Deco' (1930's)
