Title: cv joint
Post by: dimoven on April 29, 2005, 07:01:22
The near offside cv joint was replaced on monday, but im still experiencing
a lot of vibration going round corners. Is this the wheel bearings or maybe
something more expensive?
Your opinions are most welcome before i go back to the garage.

Have you checked the swivle housing bearing preload?

Jack a front wheel, grab the tyre at the 12 & 6 o'clock positions and try to move the top in & bottom out several times to feel any movement. Better to get someone else to have a look at the swivle seal, it's easier to see!
Check both sides!

It could be a loose wheel bearing or trackrod balljoint.

Hi Donn,

When your CV joint was done were the wheel bearings replaced or at the least regreased?
Were the locknuts tightened up correctly?

Another couple of pointers maybe

Hello chris W,
To tell the truth i never asked whether the bearings had been greased or even checked, but next week i will ask the garage to inspect it properly.Ive been to paddock spares this morning and sure enough after a few miles, when turning into a right hand bend the vibration and an audible squeak were apparent .

Just to confirm what I was suggesting Donn.
There are two bearings, one top and one bottom, on the swivel housing that allow the steering to swivel. On the top bearing there is a "swivel pin" with shims under it that sets the preload or tightness of the swivel action.
If the preload is a little slack then this can cause the assembly that the wheel and brakes are attached to to vibrate when you hit a bump or during cornering.

It's a common problem and only needs the removal of a shim or two to correct it.
