hi there i've got a 300 tdi auto discovery it's got 33 inch tyres on it and i want to change the transfer box to a defender one to help with my gearing will a defender one fit straight in and fit to my auto box
-
ive heard of people do this.. i think they just fit straight on

Hi Digger
I fitted a 90 1.4 transfer box to my V8 discovery which had similar sized tyres it improved the gearing a lot ,it was a straight forward change [with some advice from this forum].Keep in mind they are bloody heavy you may need a hand, the wife got under the disco
with me and helped by operating the jack ect.

the bolt pattern is exactly the same mate, the box is the same, just different internals thats all,but cant remember if yours has the borg warner box,it will still fit,but if it is the borg warner box,you need to modify the transfer box linkage a little
-
Just read on another forum that a B-W has a longer front prop as it's a shorter gearbox. Never checked though.
-
yeah its a straight swop mate.
Ive got to do it now the auto is in as the gearing is a little on the higs side with 35" tyres and a dfisco transfre box

I'm running a 300tdi manual on 265/75 R16. With the standard t/box and a car full of family and camping gear I could never quite find the right gear, which was a real PITA. As luck would have it I was out on a green lane day on Salisbury plain and my T/box broke, so the truck got treated to a Defender t/box. The result has been great, returning the truck to being useable again.
The speedo is spot on with the tyre and box combination, and the acceleration is pretty good too with a tweeked pump. The top speed is about the same, but then I avoid the M/Ways like the plague anyway.

hold on... isn't the ratio on a tranny mated to a auto box widely different to that of a manual ? you might have a big shock if it's not a 1:1.2 to 1:1.4 swap (standard disco to defender).
-
Just for the record I have now changed my 3.9 v8 for a later model with the same sized engine (v8) in my last disco and fitted the same sized tyres 33s. This time I spoke to Aztec engineering and they supplied the gears to convert my existing transfer box to defender spec .

Just put a defender 110td5 transfer box in my 1998 v8 auto disco it works a treat.
-
i can second the above ive not long fitted a defender td5 transfer box in my D2 v8 and its alot better to dive on big tyres.

Only with the Chrysler Torqueflight 3-speed, which had a 1:1 ratio LT230. The B-W 4-speed uses 1.2 or thereabouts on either the B-W or LT230 for RRC and Disco respectively.
It sort of makes the 3-speed like it has no 1st and 3rd is like 4th.
