Title: Wheel studs,
Post by: LandRoger on September 24, 2010, 18:33:49
I have been given a nice clean set of alloys from a Rangy classic the 3 spoke kind, been told that i need to get longer wheel studs for them i must admit my studs do seem short with no thread protruding past the wheel nut, not picked up the alloys yet in case your thinking why doesnt he just try the things, :) :)

You shouldn't need to fit longer studs if the wheels are designed to fit the vehicle. I suspect the RR alloys need 'sleeve' type nuts that bury into the holes in the wheel for more thread engagement. Did the holes look larger than the steel wheels? If so, this is to allow the sleeve nut to fit.

Forgot to say my vehicle is a Defender 90 with drum rear brakes, i know that spacers are needed for some alloys to fit and have been told that only the aftermarket Firestyle will fit without longer studs or spacers,??

Range rover/disco alloys do not fit properly. they do not sit flush against the hub without being modified.
Also the studs are different for steel or alloy wheels. Alloy ones are longer and also the nuts are totally different.
The studs have a marking on them if they are suitable for alloys (no mark for steel)

^what he said!

If yours has drums I suspect thyour best bet is to get a nice set of disco 1 steelies, stronger, easy to find at a good price, and not too ugly either!
