Title: steering box

Hi folkes can any one help just brought an f reg defender 90 it has alot of play in the steering at least an 8th of a turn either way,can anyone tell me what the problem could be,also i have a 300tdi disco on an m plate would the steering bits fit my defender well the parts i need to change to solve the problem thanks Justin.

I would check the steering shaft UJ and the steering arm ball joint.

It maybe play in the steering box itself which I think can be adjusted with the nut in the center. but someone more knowledge may be along soon to help you out.

If the steering box is only loose at the centre then adjusting it will make it tight when you turn left or right.  If it is loose all the way from lock to lock then it can be adjusted.

Sometimes they come loose, my LSE was like that, but the original supplier didn't even trust LR mechanics to adjust them, under warranty the whole box had to be swapped and returned to the manufacturer for adjsutement.

Unfortunately though when they wear it is only in the straight ahead position, in this case it can only be fixed with a recon/new unit.
