Title: Chirping!
Post by: Landroverstormer on September 05, 2010, 07:30:10
I noticed last time I was at the front of my 300tdi that there was a rotational chirping noise. I thought it could be the belt but noticed the viscous fan coupling was shot to bits. This was replaced yesterday, with the tensioner having been replaced recently.

It's only evident when it's hot, and when you switch off you can hear it as the engine slows and stops (last 2/3 rotations).

I've sprayed some WD40 on the various pulleys and hope it's something that didn't appreciate a past wading exercise!

Just wondered if there is anything typical on a 300 that would make this noise. I'm perhaps worrying unnecessarily but I'm doing the London to Brighton on 26th and don't fancy the water pump giving up en route!

Any advice would be appreciated!

The tensioner is the prime chirper, think even a new tensioner could do it in a few miles...pot luck - fix with the penny mod, it works! Alternator chirp when bearing its on its way out as does the power steering pump, have had both of those do that but the failure to seizure was rapid. You could try using a listening rod to locate the source - length of dowel/ long screw driver etc pressed against ear with the other end moved around engine and auxiliaries until you locate the source (carefully of moving parts of course).

Nice one Saffy! I'll try to find the culprit using a listening rod, without getting myself dragged into the pulley!

What's the penny mod out of interest?
