Title: Sill repairs
Post by: MattDilley on March 16, 2010, 19:13:28
Hi,

I need so welding doing for my MOT and was wondering the best route to go down?
I have seen the repair over sills, but have been advised by a few people to remove the whole sill and weld in a 2x1 inch box section?
Will this be acceptable or am I best using the over sills?
Some help will be much appreciated?

Thanks matt

That's what I'll be doing with mine when they go.

Chap who fixed mine used the same, but 5mm thick steel. I think that and the tree sliders mean that I now have side impact protection!

Hi Matt

Mine are box section - done in some haste in Artic weather prior to a test date in 1st week of January (!) and the MOT man was happy.

Not only that, but using 3mm box, I suspect that the sill replacements will outlast the rest of the vehicle...

If you ever head this way (Towcester), you are welcome to have a gander - tea can, of course, be supplied!

What you use also depends on how bad the sills are - is it the inner or outer sill, or both, and to what extent - and on how good a welder you are.  A very good guide to using the box section method can be found at http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=16471

did mine last year with 100x50x5mm box section and made some spacers up for the body mounts with 10mm plate as i couldnt get any 100x60mm near where i was working.

easy but time consuming to do-took a day a side but i needed to get home in it each night!!!

i've also now fastened some tree/rocksliders to the sills and they are also jackable if needed

I do get the impression that you need to be careful how much you cut out before welding the box in. I know on mine they just took out the rotten bits on the visible face of the sills (they weren't too bad, I just found one 3cm hole while preparing to fit tree sliders and the welder found a few other manky bits on closer inspection). As a result there was no problem with alignment as the top of the original sills remained to hold the pillars in the right place while the box section was welded in.

thats wot i did on mine-cut out the inner and outer but left some to weld to and left the top in place and then puddle welded the top sill to the box section through some holes-i followed the how to in the technical archive for the range rover sills and adjusted it where needed to fit mine.

can bottom the sills out now without fear of them falling to pieces
