Title: rangy or disco

looking to build an offroader which is best disco 1 or range rover classic im in need of a project it must be a diesel, auto and one of the afore mentioned cars bearing in mind disco high c of g it will be lifted by 2"

Hi, IMHO go for RRC., better looks, more character and comfort, however, panels are harder to come by. Mechanically the same, but a lot more choice if you go for Disco.
Just take you time and look for the ones with no rot, they are out there!

AND.... the tail gate on the RRC is far more practical and less vulnerable than Disco rear door. One v small nudge and rear bumper lifts and you can't then open then open the door.
Maybe its a biased opinion as I own a RRC.......................

top tip ref bumping the rear and opening the back up.
 Ive been looking for a rangy for weeks now in desperation looked at some disco this afternoon but they were rubbish the best thing he could do with them was weigh them in for scrap

as cheap as possible but depends on spec if nothing done to it in the way of offroad bits prob 1300 bearing in mind ill have to spend a good bit specing up but ideal car is diesel auto cooking oil ill be using

It's a lot easier to find a diesel disco then a rangy I reckon, also correct me if I'm wrong guys, but don't all Disco's from '93 onwards use the 24 spline diffs and halfshafts? which are a lot  stronger than the 10 spline Rangy ones.

The Disco is a lot more top heavy than a Rangy, take that into account if you're gonna give it a big suspension lift, the driving position in the Rangy is much better for offroading you can really tell where the front corners are easily........

I hope I've helped a little bit, I've had both and I preferred the Rangy, but, it was bobtailed and had a Chevy 5.7lt, a lot more difficult to bobtail a Disco.....

I would go for an RRC.  Biased maybe but just remember that the Disco is just a Rangie in disguise!!!!!

'95 model year onwards, just like the RRC in fact.  All 300 series should be 24 spline which are marginally less prone to failure because the splines are not cut as deep into the halfshaft and there are more of them.  As the halfshafts wear though this causes it's own problems.

looking on autotrader seen a lot of RRC 94 and younger at good money will these be of any use bearing in mind the i presume extra weight compared to the earlier ones and they will they have air suspension?
 what about spares and are the many off road goodies for these later models

i thought i had a lot of clearance in my garage up and over door but i just foundi dont by a loud scratching sound as i left the garage a bit quick this morning the handle of the door has been hitting the roof the wife tells me this has happened to her previously and she thought it was something in the boot leprechauns i suppose!!!
Any way we now have quite few scratches on the roof luckily they cant be seen and they arent too deep. have now taken handle of and adjusted it.
Proves one thing the debate has ended it cant be a disco i have a double garage and want to put both cars safely inside.
thanks for thinking of me mark-d but g/ yarmouth is a bit far for me it sounded good
any thoughts on a p38

A lot of the early P38's were trouble by all accounts and very expensive for spares, I've never owned one mind you...........just repeated what I've been told.

iirc around a grand for a full set of new wheel bearings.

i have a two door V8 rangie, manual though so you wouldn't want it, always rangies for me, had a disco and everytime i looked at it i just didn't like it.

Hello there, i have had 3 disco's in the past of all 3 kinds lol, v8,200tdi, 300tdi..   by far i prefer my current v8 rrc. just so much nicer to drive

If you get air suspension you can make it lower to fit the garage.  A P38 will saty in access to crawl into a garage, with a classic you have to cheat a bit but you can always get it reprogrammed so it sits a bit lower.  Bear in mind that at the touch of a button it gets 2" taller, without the need for expensive suspension mods to make it handle well ;)
