Title: Taxi rattle TD5 - new head.....
Post by: age on November 28, 2009, 23:28:21
Got the new AMC head on and very pleased so far ........ Just a leak on the new regulator gasket ironically, given the old one was chucking out diesel!

Timed up carefully on rebuild, but have a distinct taxi rattle on tickover.  Am I right to have slightly advanced timing as prime suspect?

LR (and Haynes) refer to the locking tools for the cam sprocket and flywheel - I marked everything up and was very careful, but suspect a fraction out?

Are the special tools really essential to do it properly, or can you lock both ends up easily in other ways (as I'm sure any adjustment will be well within the cam-sprocket bolt 'slack' in the elongated bolt holes)?

Cheers, A

 :P :P :P :P
typical crap reg gaskets
what have you set the injector arms at ?
and how did you do them ?
hard to say if its timing, but with tollerences being so tight on a td5, you'd no it if it was out

Cheers Dan - injector adjusters cranked down hard then backed off 1 full turn.  I'll check them over while the cover's off.  She's running quieter with each mile - just that taxi tick-over still, so I'll back the timing off a tad and see what happens. A

Aaahhh bliss!  All the settling in (especially the timing chain tensioner I guess) had advanced the timing a good 1/2 degree or so - our timing marks on the crank pulley had survived the Noah-like condiitions......

Slack off the cam sprocket - lock cam and tweak on the bolt 'slots' - Bob is indeed your mothers brother.  Sounds as sweet as a nut, I'll get the acoustics back on tomorrow - but really chuffed.  The icing on the cake of the whole project.

Went mad and took all the steps in for shot blast and matt powder coat last week - they were letting the whole image down!  Darned good job - and really great value for money.  Just need to get those hinges cleaned and primed now.......! A
