I haven't got a clue if the egr valve could be the culprit or not but a basic rule of thumb is:

Black smoke = unburnt fuel
Grey smoke = oil
White smoke = water

Check your oil, check all your engine breathers are clear, monitor closely. If you can get rid of the EGR then do so, there is a split of opinion as to whether or not it will produce a noticeable increse in performance or economy but nobody really says its a bad idea. Kits are cheap and plentiful on ebay, in mags etc and the job itself is not difficult, providing bolts dont round or shear and the million and one other things that go wrong on simple jobs dont happen.... :)
