Title: Somebody stop me!
Post by: xmob on April 01, 2005, 01:21:05
I've seen an SJ on eBay.  The auction finishes tomorrow.  It's local to me.  It'll never go on the road again.  I can't really afford it, but I'll manage.  Much as I'd like an SJ, I'd rather have a rag top.

Please stop me bidding.

I really really really want a plugga, but I have a Series III sitting on the drive that I should be fixing.  Maybe if I buy the SJ, then sell it when Thora is complete.

Somebody stop me!!

How about playing hunt the mouse.  Get your wife to hide the mouse from the computer, somewhere in the house.  If you find it in time, you can bid! :(bigshock):

Go on... you know you want too...

Besides, you were obviously meant to have it, otherwise you wouldn't have noticed it from all  the others on eBay....

There is absolutely no way dare  I mention this to the wife!  I'll be looking for a new home.  At least if I do buy it, I can tell her not to worry 'cos it's going up to LQ and will stay there.  Hiding the mouse wouldn't work, I'd just get a new one out of the loft.   :)

Come on guys!  You're meant to be stopping me, not encouraging me.

You've got just under 7 hours to convince me not to buy it...

"I can't really afford it"

"I'd rather have a rag top"

"I have a Series III sitting on the drive that I should be fixing"

There you are, see ... you don't actually want it at all :D

Unless, of course, the SJ seller wants to swap with your Series III :-k
Title: Somebody stop me!
Post by: xmob on April 01, 2005, 11:16:49
I will never part company with my Series III.  Hell would freeze over 1st.  Which is part of the problem.  The missus wouldn't have a problem with me getting a mud plugga, if I didn't have the Series III.

Pete,

It's an absolute heap... for that money you could fix the Series 3 and have a better end result.

Look... it is even fitted with an a-frame... must break down a lot

:-)

(Does that help ?)
Title: Somebody stop me!
Post by: xmob on April 01, 2005, 12:29:35
Tim, if you can turn this into a runner for £155 feel free!   :D   I would even make you tea/coffee/beer and feed you.
Title: Somebody stop me!
Post by: gords on April 01, 2005, 12:34:53
Well, just think ... if you buy the Suzuki, you'll have less time to devote to your series III. Are you sure that's fixable though
Title: Somebody stop me!

All Series Land Rovers are fixable!  As Trigger once said, "I've had this brush all my life, it's only had 4 new handles and 6 new heads"   :D

For £155???  Then there's the issue of it needing to be on the drive, which will NOT keep SWMBO happy.  At least with an SJ (that moves) I can use it and keep it at work.

Just over an hour to go now.

I say sod it, buy it and get it up to LQ and have some fun  :D

These are great for off roading in, and cheap to maintain and repair, the series will wait just a while longer

ONE LIFE, LIVE IT

Don't do it Pete...

I've just read the description... you need to put a new clutch in it before you can even use it
Title: Somebody stop me!
Post by: xmob on April 01, 2005, 16:19:00
Clutch isn't a problem, remember where I work and what we use as fleet vehicles.  Can be done in about 2 hours.   :D

Fifteen minutes to go.  Somebody keep me occupied with something...

Post by: Andy. on April 01, 2005, 16:20:06
Buy it and plaster it with Mud Club stickers
Title: Somebody stop me!
Post by: muddyweb on April 01, 2005, 16:24:30
He'll need to Andy... the amount of rot in the bodyshell, it will fall off otherwise !

There are others on there Pete... just need a bit of engine TLC... much better condition
Title: Somebody stop me!
Post by: muddyweb on April 01, 2005, 16:31:56
Incidentally, aside from the fact that it is currently not "as one"... what's wrong with the Series ?
Title: Somebody stop me!
Post by: xmob on April 01, 2005, 16:35:15
I bottled it!  Pat on the back for Pete.  Still feeling like I've let myself down though.

The Series ideally needs a new chassis, other than that (and a set of springs), it just needs putting back together.

I have a good as new rear half chassis (including middle crossmember), but I don't really have the means to line it up properly.  My welding is competent enough, just not able to line up two halves of chassis on a (once) grass drive.
Title: Somebody stop me!
Post by: muddyweb on April 01, 2005, 16:40:57
Well then.... I happen to know a man with a reasonable Series 3 chassis who would be happy to part with it for a lot less than £155 ;-)

Not a million miles from you either..

Pete

Just found this thread,

obviously I've been paying attention guys,      ....................

If you still want a rag top SJ410

one of the lad's that's coming with us to Langdale on Sunday has one sat on the drive with no T & T etc..., all the obvious extra's, mud, rust, holes everywhere, run's and rattles (occaisional'y) like a bag of knac$$rs.

So, if your'e still up for the challenge............ I'll introduce you.

The obligaratory fee will apply of course (either 10% of sale or a cup of coffee).  Coffee will be great (85p, probably best end of deal)

Se ya at the weekend

Dave

Weeeelllllll...

A would still like a rag top to play with while Thora the Series 3 is being sorted.  But Thora might be sorted quicker than expected thanks to this thread.   :D

I'll speak to y'all on Sunday.  I'll buy you a coffee anyway.   :D

erm, might be a simple question, but if you dont realy want an SJ.... why on earth was you looking on eBay for one in the first place then

<have fun if you get one>
Title: Somebody stop me!
Post by: xmob on April 05, 2005, 23:07:14
Many moons ago, I wanted an SJ because I couldn't afford a Landie.  Then my uncle sold me a Series 3.  Turned out to be a lemon.

Still, I fell in love with Thora and vowed to get her back to health.  My missus HATES me using her Disco off road, so I was looking for a toy to use until Thora is fixed.  An SJ was/is ideal as they're cheap and we use them at LQ.

IF a usable one comes up at a sensible price, I'll still buy one.   :D

In terms of safety, they are VERY safe.  Roll cages, reinforced floors and seat mountings blah blah.  It's just things like faulty electrics and bad bodies that make them look bad.
Title: Somebody stop me!

Imagine having to repair all the dints that they get from the way people drive them (saw one bloke, should I say, "gunning it", through a mud run, when we were last there)!

Best to leave them alone in that respect. :D

You could trailer one to somewhere, if there was a spare one available.

Where there's a will there's a way! :?
Title: Somebody stop me!
Post by: xmob on April 06, 2005, 20:13:35
Dints and scratches we can live with.  It's broken springs, diffs, clutches etc that cause the problems.

And the idiots, as you saw, that gun it through mud and water.  They then wonder why their engine won't run.  We can tell straight away if it's a genuine mechanical problem or not, due to the amount of mud and water under the bonnet.  They soon learn though when we just make them sit and wait while it all dries out.   :D

I don't think borrowing one is an option, they are nearly always either in use, or being fixed.  Plus I'd probably end up breaking one.
