Title: Converting 3.5 EFi into 4.6???
Post by: BobtailBogey on August 31, 2009, 19:25:15
Right my engine is not far from needing a rebuild but its only done 54k......
Getting quite noisy and bits of metal in the oil.

So have always said when it goes im replacing with a 4.6 so what is involved and what will i need to convert my 3.5 EFi into a 4.6??

im thinking of buying a complete p38 so i have everything or would it not be much work to just get the engine??

Put everything in then mate.  I would have suggested that you fit the hot wire EFi anyway as the flapper fitted to the 3.5 isn't up to it.

BUT the system fitted to the P38 is a sequential system and more economical still.

You should be able to strip out the wiring loom for the system but it will need a couple of inputs "making up"

Probably the gearbox input for one, the road speed sensor for another.  You can get round this by fitting the road speed sensor form a late RRC and the second speedo cable form a 1998 model, these few cars had hot wire EFi with the electronic speed signal and a mechanical speedo head, that's what you need.

IIRC you will also have coil packs so the engine will be less susceptible to water splashing (no dizzy).

Fitting an ealry V8 front end to the engine is possible if you wanted to keep it looking standard (flapper EFi and dizzy) but you need conversion parts, the flywheel you have needs to go, the P38 uses a 36-1 tooth wheel cast into the back face of the flywheel, to ensure it is fitted in the correct orientation one of the securing bolts is slightly out of place, so an early flywheel won't go on .

The exhausts are useless to you so look for a decent 4 branch system or at the very least a 3.9 or 4.2 EFi system, preferably ported.

Good luck :D

Also most seem to be auto's but i want to run a manual box.

this is just gonna add even more work to the project aint it..... :(

You will need to find a flywheel from either a later 300 series Disco or manual P38, if it's anything like the lucas hot wire then the EFi either sees a siganl from the auto box selector or a resistor that tells it there is a manual box fitted.  i don't know how much interaction there is between the EFi and the electronic auto box, but I'd imagine there are settings for auto and manual.

Suppose ther is only one way to find out  ;)

Hope to find myself a salvage p38 for less than 1k soon and need to find myself a decent sized lock up to do it all in.

Like you say, if you start with a complete car that runs you can keep taking stuff off until there's a problem :)

Exactly.

just would of imagined it would of been easier using all the managment from the already running engine. :)

will keep up-dates on progress
