Hi all iv got a 200tdi from a 93 reg disco in my series and want to check the tappet spacing and put new seal on top casing when done, Can anyone tell me the distances req'd please? and any tips etc!
Thanks for any advice as cant find any info in haynes manual for a disco

It is 0.20 mm both inlet and exhaust and its the 'rule of nines'.
When number 1 valve is open, number 8 should be closed, when number 2 is open, number 7 should be closed and so on...
Its a fairly simple job, but you will need a 30mm socket for the bottom bolt to turn the engine over and make sure you pull the wire to the fuel solenoid off before you start turning the engine over by hand or it may fire up.

best way i've found to turn the engine over is put it in gear (highest possible), jack up one corner and turn the engine over by spinning the road wheel - far easier than using a socket.

and check the little bucket things that sit on top of the valves. they are prone to wearing through then you will have to replace them and start again . there only cheap to replace .alan

Hi
Setting tappets is fairly easy, use the rule of 9. From the front of the engine the tappets are numbered 1 to 8.
Turn the engine over with a socket on the crank (it wont start if your ignition is off)
When number 1 tappet is fully down set #8 tappet to 0.20mm
when # 2 is fully down set #7 to 0.20mm
when # 3 is fully down set #6 to 0.20mm
when # 4 is fully down set #5 to 0.20mm
when # 5 is fully down set #4 to 0.20mm
when # 6 is fully down set #3 to 0.20mm
when # 7 is fully down set #2 to 0.20mm
when # 8 is fully down set #1 to 0.20mm
As said above check the tappet collets( the little cap thingies)on top of the valve stems, they do have a habit of wearing away.

Ah brilliant just like a series then, It always surprises me just how similar all landys are really,
Great cheers for info guys.
Last question tho these collets is it obvious if they have worn away? and what effect does this have?
Cheers

Hi
If they look like a ring then they are worn.
A new one looks like a cap.
