Title: a tale of two rads....to buy or not to buy..
Post by: lee celtic on May 28, 2009, 20:10:53
Hi All

I'm looking to replace my Rad as the bottom half has no fins left on it

my question is this....

there are two rads I'm looking at , the standard all metal type £99 (same as I have ) and the more modern ali and plastic type £99 used on newer cars .

which one is best and has anyone fitted the ali/plastic type to their discovery 200tdi  :D

cheers Lee..

I fitted a new Britpart rad with plastic  end tanks to my 300tdi a couple of months ago and seems to be fine .I was a bit unsure about the plastic bits but that was the cheapest option at the time as its my daily transport.
I did consider getting the old one repaired (new core, thats where the hole was, with original brass ends),which would have cost about £150 +vat at a local specialist rad place, which isnt a bad price. That would have been the better option and if i had the time and cash i would have gone for that.
So if you can get a new all metal rad for £99 I'd choose that ,or get the old one reconditioned from a reputable place.
In the words of the bloke at the rad. place  " I wouldnt have any plastic c*** anywhere near my own car " !

yay replies

I have had loads of plastic/ali rads in road cars but I was just wondering how they would stand up to offroad use .

the plastic/ali ones do work better but the fins are much closer together and therfore may trap more crud ...

just interested to hear if anybody has experiance of a plastic/ali one in an offroader . as I didn't know until I looked for a replacement that they existed....
