Title: Play in prop shaft???
Post by: JimP on May 22, 2009, 11:33:39
Got a problem with my 86 3.5V8 RRC

There is a loud vibration noise when you let off the accelerator, I initially thought it might be the handbrake drum full of mud, so stripped it down and cleaned it all out and replaced it all nice and clean, but still got the noise.

I have found that my rear diff was full of watery crap insead of oil which wont help (did 2 play days last weekend!) so this is being changed toinght, but while under the car I have noticed that there is alot of play in the rear diff, if I hold the prop and pull it I can move it back and forth about 5mm, now is this because there is no oil in the diff (doubt it!) or is the diff or prop boogered??

I am a bit a newby with landy's so excuse me if some of that sounds basic or anything!!

Almost certainly that is the reatr diff pinion bearing FUBARed. Easiest way to fix is to throw a new diff in it.

There should be no sideways  play in the diff at all, the bearings run with preload.  You shouls notice a small amount of backlash that represents play in the mesh of the teeth inside, but only about 0.1mm at the edge of the crownwheel, though the wear in the halfshafts always makes it look much worse.

Have all parts and only round the corner if you need anything, I'm breaking mine at the moment.
