Title: Can I still open the boot door with a spare wheel mounted Simbar cycle rack?
Post by: auf_wiedersehen_pet on April 23, 2009, 19:38:27
Can I still open the boot door with a spare wheel mounted Simbar cycle rack? Or do the cycle wheels swing round and clobber the OS lights?

Anybody got any pictures?

No pictures, but not had any issues with 4 bikes loaded although try not to open the door with the bikes on so as not to stuff the hinges up even further!

I have a halfrauds special that straps to the spare - I can open the door fine - but I always take the front wheel of my bike as its a full susser with a faily long wheelbase so needs to be shunted across to one side to get it to sit right and avoid daft levels of overhang.  I always mount it so the front is at the Off-side and with no wheel on it all is well, but I recall a time when I had 3 bikes on there for a trip to the Orkenys and I could still open the door with the wheels fitted as the rack was far enough out from the door to clear the wing/lamp units, even on full extension of the hinges - only thing was the lock took a chunk out of the buffer plate as it closed due to the hinges sinking with the weight.........

Cant say for certain with your make of rack though as I dont know how far out it sitts in relation to the spare, sorry............

Hi Mark,

Many, many thanks for the photos.

One further question. I have 265's on 17" Predators - slightly more offset. If I push a plank against the spare tyre then measure from the inside (tyre side) of the plank to the outside of the spare wheel holder, I have a measurement of 120mm. How does that compare to standard width tyres (are yours standard?) and will I have enough clearance?

I'm a little confused as to where you'd like me to measure mate. I get the bit about the plank against the spare wheel but this is where I'm getting lost....sorry. I think you mean measure from the outside of the wheel, through the wheel to the carrier...???? but I could be wrong....

If you've got larger wheels then I think you might struggle to even fit the carrier as the boss which fits behind the spare wheel won't stick out far enough through the wheel for you to attach the carrier too...!!!! I have standard 235/70/16 fitted, I'll take a picture tomorrow to show you what I mean.

OK - here's round 2 of photo's and measurements for you mate.

First off......with a plank of wood pressed against the spare wheel I measured through the centre of the Simbars boss (it's hollow and allowed me to get to the spare wheel carrier) and I get a measurement of 100mm.... this is with standard 235/70/16......see picture below......

As I mentioned earlier the boss for the cycle carrier is designed to stick out through the spare wheel just far enough for you to be able to secure the rack to the boss with a padlock. See picture below....

And this one....

This hole is 80mm from the wheel carrier, again see picture below....

Once again I hope this helps mate. If you need anything else then just ask........

Your a real star - many, many thanks.

I've got 20mm less space than you but on the plus side, I can weld and my wheel centre seems much wider.

I'll post photos when I get it fitted.

Thanks again.
