Title: A gripping Problem
Post by: Gremlin on March 25, 2009, 15:33:25
Hi Guys & Galls.  I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this thread but if it isnt I'm sure someone will put me right.

I have recently competed in the March Hare Trial in my Suzuki X90 where I can only use 2WD.  On wet muddy grass and on mud and leaves in a wood I found virtually no grip at all even on virtually level ground.  Any attempt to climb any gradient was impossible, even with tyre pressures down to 7psi.  I am therefore wondering if narrower tyres, I am currently running 185 road tyres, and higher pressures, say 30psi, may help to cut through the mud and give me more grip. I would appreciate the groups views, advice and recommendations on how to increase the grip, bearing in mind that I cannot have aggressive tyre patterns, LSD’s etc.

i wouldnt go much thinner that 185

it may just be that its the road tyres dont have any grip on the wet stuff

if you get some MTs it will help alot but they are better at lower pressures maybe 15 psi ?

Why not fit these

Fully road legal, ok on road and not too noisy, but excellent off road
Cost about £50 each from Sowden tyres, I have 215/75/15 on my Vit and love them.

Thanks Guys.  Unfortunately, the rules for the event only allow normal road tyres.  I am currently using MAXXIS 751's which are as agressive as the rules permit.

Of all the surfaces wet grass can be the most impossible. I have seen full blown challenge vehicles going nowhere on a damp grass slope. Were other 2WD, road tyre  equipped, vehicles doing any better?

Everyone was having difficulty, including the Landrover 4X4 rescue vehicle.  However, as far as I could tell just about everyone was getting some grip, I was getting nothing.  It could, of course, be down to my crap driving.

Can't you use a good set of AT's as they are a 50/50 on-off road tyre, if you could use them then i'd get a set of BFG's

Jav.

Thanks for your help Guys.  I'm now away for about three weeks and will be unable to reply to any further posts until I get back.

kumho ATs look like road tyres should be able to get away with them
