hi can anybody help me out with tecky stuff, i have a 200tdi discovery and the transfer box is winding like a good one and has play if you grad hold of prop and move it up / down, its on the front propshaft side of transfer box. can the bearing be replaced in vehicle or does the transfer box need to taken out / replaced.
-
it does have to come out mate,as the bearing is pressed in from inside the casing :(

thanks, i do have a chance of replacing transfer box from a donor discovery 1 v8 into my discovery 1 200tdi same year, whats the best option. take both out complete gearbox/ transfer box and swap over parts, or just take out transferboxs in vehicles and swap.

id just do the transfer boxes . the lower bolt on the front side when you take that out it will let all the oil out . so either drain it or stick a stud in it on removal . i made some dowels to help refit it . can be a little awkward without catching the front seal on the transfer box .. alan

if its the front bearing on the transfer box then i did mine in situ. i have some pics somewhere. it was a case of dropping the front prop, removing the flange . pulling the seal out ....remove the circlip and pull out the bearing. the bearing was a little tricky to pull out.....but will come out.
mine went quite after that :D

The front output bearing can be changed without removing the box, did one at the weekend for a mate , they all have a bit of movement in them , but the bearing and seal was less than a tenner, so worth changing to see if it helps.

thanks all for the advice, ive taken the transfer box off and in process of putting the other in, did'nt get to read last two posts untill now. but having just inspected the old one you are right they can be done in vehicle. oh well halfway there now, thanks all
