Title: Td5 battery light flicker
Post by: lofty134 on March 12, 2009, 19:06:25
Hey,

When driving along, the battery light flickers, not all the time, maybe once or twice every few mins. Is this a sign that the alternator is on its way out?

Any other suggestions welcomed

Cheers
Adam

Might be the drive belt (serpentine belt ?), getting a bit slack, or its about to go ping

Hello mate,
check out the belt first, look for any nasty chunks that could be taken out of it,
one of my mates had a stone take a big bite out of his v belt and it slipped when the missing bit got to a pulley.
Also check out the tension on the belt.
If you dont notice any problems with the belt then I'd take it to an Auto electrician who can test the current that the alternator is giving out.
Good luck,
Cheers.................

Cheers for your suggestions

I took all the plastic covers off and found the front camshaft oil seal leaking. The oil then dripped onto the belt and made it slip, causing the flicker.

Ordered new seal, just awaiting delivery. Hope that will sort it.

Thanks again
Adam
