Title: Bottom Pulley on a 200TDi
Post by: J.D. on March 04, 2009, 09:14:08
I need to get the bottom pulley off ym 200TDi engine to rebuild it and it is refusing to budge. So far  have:

bent two pullers,
nearly cracked the timing belt cover,
give it the good news with large hammers,

and it still refuses to budge. Its the first one I have ever not had come off, I know it is welded on or anything as I was the last one to put it on.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Hi
Do you have access to a gas axe.
Dont chop it off just warm the pully up a bit. Dont overdo it and heat up the crank though.
Do this with a set of pullers in place.

use the proper puller?

The four bolts in the pulley are for the correct puller to attach too, use the right one and it will work, us a piece of Chinese junk ----- well you know the answer to that.

Connect a suitable puller, tighten it up fairly tight and hit the puller on the centre bolt, if that don't shift it tighten up some more and add some gentle heat with the gas axe, BUT NOT ON THE CRANK and keep tightening the centre bolt.

Make your own puller (bole holes are 75mm centre to centre. Tighten them, whack the centre, tighten again, etc, etc. A bit of heat is ok, but don't melt the damper - it doesn't matter about the timing cover seal as it should be replaced anyway.

do be carefull useing heat with a puller as if there is loads of tension in it it will come away quite vigorously and that may well hurt either you or your radiator quite badly.
