my old rangie is my pride and joy,love it,but the time is coming where either the rangie has got to go or the passat,i want to run the 1 motor,so i want to keep the rangie,but 3.9 auto is a bit thirsty,and i dont want to gas the rangie,want to convert it to 200tdi and manuel,im a mechanic,and a dab hand at welding,if done this,i would be looking at a complete doner vechile,i know mounts will have to be welded on,any views tips on how to do this,mainly to do with wiring and fuel lines,any help would be much appreciated as always,i know its alot of work,but theres sentimental value in this motor,cheers jim :D

Don't a**e about, gas it. It will cost the same to run as a TDi and be loads less grief to do. £1,300 buys a top of the shop multi point LPG system that fits in place of the spare (which let's face it doesn't match the tyres any of us use anyway) with all the niceness of a petrol auto.
As a comparison my sister's 300 TDi will do 30mpg driving carefully and 21mpg towing the 'van. My wife's 300 manual does 27 taking it steady(ish).

I am with him ^^^^^^^^^^^^ GAS it
its a lot less hassle and you can buy a cheaper kit and fit it yourself

I have done the V8 to tdi for a friend and can tell you....you will love it and is not that hard to do (if you can weld not that there's alot ;) )
i can pm you pic's if you need them, by doing the v8 to tdi you will find you have much more power than the std efi and better fuel economy.
it wont cost you loads to do it your self in fact i only charge £700 to do it (this is a ref. to how easy it is to do and is based on a 200tdi engine and box taken from a scrap motor)
seeing you can buy a mot fail disco for as little as £200 i would go for doing it your self seeing you know want your doing and go down that root

Huh?
TDI = 107/110BHP
3.9V8 = 190ish BHP
Sorry you have lost me there a bit....

Got me thinking as well! Even a 3.5 carb has 130 bhp (EFi 165) :-k

Good conversion, just changed my old 82 greenlaner to a tdi from daughters old car. Mine was diesel already using a Nissan Patrol motor so it was relatively easy. Get an old Disco and use the ngine, gearbox, rads etc makes it very easy in my view, only PITA is the welding but not much of an issue with a donor vehicle. A small issue is getting the rocker cover off as it will sit a tad under the decker panel so it doesn't come off with out some fiddling !!
Performance wise it's fine, I have tweaked the injection pump a bit and it's good still returns mid 30s most of the time.

i killlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll you

i was thinkin of gettin rid of my disco an buyin a diesal one instead but i found it cheaper to have it gassed then faf around with as i like the sound an the smoothness of the v8 an the fact i can hear the passenger sat next to me over the engine lol an plus if u doin all the work yourself aint u gotta get engineers reports for insurance reasons an declare it all to dvla a whole load of effort for the sake of 500- 600 quid your be suprised how cheap gas kits are supplied an fitted now with all saftey certs i was
-
I am going to have this done Next month as the V8 is lovely and is more powerful than a Tdi as i proved to a discovery today then i proceeded to blow the top hose :evil: :roll: but i know TDi engines well and where i live that type of engine is more suited with all the water about.

well thanks to everyone for their replys,most welcome and very helpfull,cheers jim :D

You mean the gas tank? I'd rather that than 90l of liquid highly volatile petrol in the back tbh, the gas tanks are massively strong, you try lifting one!
-
LPG tanks will stretch to 120% of their original volume before bursting, it's by far the safest fuel tank in any LR. The bit I don't like is when people stick a 9 gallon tank in the rear RH corner, just where numptys run into you.
-
the tank isnt the problem,its everything between the tank and where it enters the engine. a slight leak and BANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats why i dont like it mate,ive seen what gas has done in the past to motors,AND PEOPLE,everyone is entitled to their opinion of it,and me personally will never use it =;

The only way you are going to get 40mpg ang 100mph is being towed by a v8.
-
He did not say at the same time.....but i would had thought it more like 35mpg though

Ummm, not on a properly installed system. Sure you'll get fire if there a leak and an ignition source, but you do with petrol as well, don't you?
There should be three shut off valves on a system at least, one on the tank(s), one with a filter in the engine bay, and another on the vapouriser. All pipework should be external to the cabin to prevent build up of gas and fire risk, and if the engine stops, the fuel supply is automatically cut off in 3 places.
If a fire takes hold, the tanks just vent their gas slowly until empty, a pertol tank will melt or split and then pour burning liquid everywhere.
TBH, with a correct installation LPG is probably safer.

I agree.
