Title: It has begun! Rock sliders

it has begun been at it all day!
gna make the mounts tmrw to fix it to the chassis, will be welding a bracket to the chassis then bolting it onto that

already tapered the ends and plated it up, making the chassis brackets tmrw

bought a few tins off this dude on fleabay, half a tin with thinner will do whole car, i did 2 coats with a mini foam roller and the pait is hard as nails

i decided to do different underbody fixing to urself as i wanted it to be something i could happily mount a cage off which will be started 1st of march = payday :-)

Would result in a 2" gap between body and the sliders...

Post by: boss on February 18, 2009, 20:11:26: how many rock sliders are there anymore that wrap around the sills clover? look at any body lifted disco and you will see 90% of them dont have sliders on them.
IMO body lifts are crap anyway, the disadvantages greatley out weigh the advantages

Before you go fixing a cage onto the sliders, how much downwards force can those sliders withstand?

In normal operation when rock slider is supporting the weight of the vehicle the the bulk of the load is transmitted to the sill (if the slider rests against it) or to the out riggers and the resultant force where the slider is fixed to the chassis is relativerly small. The fixing the sliders to the chassis prevents the sills from being subjected to a twisting load.

However if you roll the vehicle with the cage fixed to the sliders and the sliders attached to the main chassis rails only, with no fixing to the sill/outriggers then the load applied to the chassis will be a significantly high torque.

Take a moment to compare the difference between the standard out riggers which support the body and your outriggers for the sills.

The standard out rigger is relativerly a lot taller where it is welede to the chassis which spreads the load over the chassis where as smaller height outriggers on the sliders will concetrate the load over a smaller section of the chassis.

I'm not saying you can't fix a roll cage to the sliders, but before you do consider whether the current method of fixing to the chassis is strong enough to take the force from the cage when if discovery gets rolled and effectively gets dropped on its roof. Altering the sill out riggers to copy the body out riggers should spread the loads better.
