Title: Are my brakes normal??
Post by: ibruceuk on December 21, 2008, 15:47:45
Hi there,

My Disco (300Tdi Auto) has just passed it's MOT and had the following brake weight readings.

FL - 450
FR - 460
RL - 220
RR - 210

Are these normal??  I can get it to try to lock up (ABS comes in) on dry tarmac at 40 with a lot of effort.

The thing that worries me is that in Low box if I press the brake with my left foot and put my weight on the pedal (I'm 19st) and then press the accelerator it can't quite hold against the engine.

Cheers for any replies,

Ian

Your MOT station should have had a Dept notoice not to test a 4x4 on the rollers follwoing a few nasty accidents.  Mine are tested with a decelerometer.

I always thought that, but he said it's fine when I mentioned it.  He's a rural garage and does quite a few Landy's too.

Those figures look OK to me.  If the machine says 'Pass', its a pass!

Funny thing is, it was always an urban legend that you couldn't test 4X4's on RBT's - now the reality is that since earlier this year, you cant!  He should really be using a decellerometer to test them and with the latest ones certified for the job you'll get just as good a result as the rollers, but I still prefer them as you can 'see' more in the results if you know what I mean........

I wouldn't worry too much, maybe take the pads out and de-glaze them and change the fluid.  At least your ABS works as it should - I'm sick of the sight of my warning lamp!

I know what you mean by 'seeing more'  it was fun trying to get a reading with my Grizzlies on, the needle was never still :)

I'll have a chat with him in a couple of months when I take SWMBO's car for it's test.

The only reason I ask is that I always thought that a vehicles brakes were supposed to be able to 'hold' the drive of the engine under any circumstances.

I managed to just fix my ABS light, a swift tap with a large implement on the offending sensor sorted that out.

Original RRC were rtated at 6 tonnes pulling, emergency use with a max road speed of 18MPH.  That said the "stall speed" test on an auto is to put it in D and hold the brakes on, then rev it.  It should "stall" at 2,000 RPM (max torque).  Doesn't work in low box though, but in low box you use the engine as a brake most of the time.
