On my 1989 rrc when hot and switched off the header tank hisses from the cap, when I put the cap on from a defender it doesn't hiss is it supposed to hiss with the rrc one? It has lost water from the cap but I think that was down to not being on properly, Ben

It could be past it's best, but TBH they do breath out once the engine is under a few psi of pressure, then they breath back in when cold.

I picked up a new land rover genuine cap for it yesterday cost me £41.05  but now the header tank doesn't hiss and is a better fit. Ben

Yeah you are right there, I could have got a used one form eBay but wanted to get a new one so that it was a proper fit. Ben

I had the exact same problem after my header tank split. The cap supplied with the 2nd hand one from ebay had a dried-out seal. Swapped back to the original cap and it's been fine ever since.
