I would say that it really depends on what you are using it for!

If you need it for occasional self recovery or some mates recovery on lanes or pay and play once a month, then I'd go for something cheaper like the Champion ones etc,

HOWEVER if you want for serious recovery on a regular basis, winch challenges etc, then get the wallet out and get the most expensive one you can afford!

Remember its not just the winch but the whole package, the electrical supply, the fixing to the vehicle, the maintenance etc

I personally would go to the 12000 ones because the winch will not be working as hard as it would with the lighter duty one.

It'll only be occasional use on lanes etc adn the odd pay & play as you say....

If you look at whats available, and what back up you might get (or not) with some of the cheaper ones, i'd spend very slightly more, and get a Superwinch EP9..... with steel cable, it's a good winch, nice to use, and full back up is only a call away......

I have a 9500 Champion from Winch solutions. Its a rebuilt 2nd hand unit that cost one hundred pounds in folding money. Last tuesday I used it about 15 times in 4 hours in pouring rain and mud and ruts up to my armpits - I had to climb out of the drivers side window to hook up...

No problems whatsoever.

I've got Plasma on mine though, I much prefer it to "wire"  :D

I would like to add to this please, I am after a winch aswell for the same purpose...I did have a champion ewx9500 last year but sold it with the disco...Be careful with them, good wich but they are NOT 100% waterproof...the motor packed up and the rocker switch was all rusted so did not work...ONLY the solenoids are water proof....But to be fair the guys at winch solutions sorted it in no time...FOC of course......I was thinking of going with them again on a 12000lb one...would love a EP9 but its the price....what would be better then EP9 or 12000lb champion....

for budget stuff ep9 is the way to go - havent seen those new champion jobbies in action so cant comment.

I would opt for 9500lb unit rather than a 12000 as on some units they tend to acheive the rating by gearing down and making them slow, real slow.

Like many bits you can by for a 4x4, it begs the question what has been sacrifieced to provide what appears to be the same basic product at half the price.

I've got a T-max 12500, great winch and just about pull anything, but just don't try and get, spare parts for the as i've been looking every where for a new casing, but it seems all there interested in is advertising products.

Been running a ChampioN C10000GS for a couple of years now, never missed a beat in spite of regular dunkings. Yes it's slower than my brother's EPi9, but I don't see why that matters. I've got all day.

Most 12,000 lb winches are 9,500lb winches, but lower geared.

9,500 lb is fine for a Disco. You don't need "top of the range" winches for Challenge events, cos I guess you wouldn't be doing challenge events in a Disco.

The Superwinch or Goodwinch seem to be good, honest "value for money" winches that will serve you well. Make sure that what ever rope you get is rated for the winch used and if the throw in pulley blocks, etc as part of the 'deal' make sure taht these are also rated.
