Post by: lee celtic on September 08, 2008, 22:47:01
Hi All

A while back sombody posted very good  pictures and diagrams of fitting another battery ..

Not a fancy smart relay fit just fitting another battery for more umph

I want to fit a second one to keep it alive over the winter it is the battery out of our caravan . I bought it from a landy dealer in scotland when the old van battery died so both the batteries are the same size and ampage I just want to keep them both topped up.

any info would be good and yes I have tried to search for it but I can't find it ..

cheers Lee...

Lee, simply strap it into the NS front of the engine bay, and then connect + to +, and - to-....... job done.

Dead easy Lee, wire live to live, run the cable across by the front of the rad, it'll tuck neatly under the rubber seal. Run the earth to the chassis directly below the second battery and voila!, done.

No fancy split charging just plenty of amp hours for turning over on cold mornings. I run a few gadgets of my second battery also, terminals are less busy and its on the right side for running wires up the snorkel etc.

That sounds abit too simple, i was on the belief that you have too have + to one batt and - to the other then you link them both up, well thats the way i've seen rigged up, but i'm not sure if thats only for the 24v system,

And there lies my problem 12 or 24 :-k

I though it was -  to + , not + to +
for 12 volts..

I'm asking cause I'm not sure :? :?

No.  Mine get hot jump starting.

Go to a breakers and get 2 good thick cables made for eht job.  Put an earth to the engine if you want good cranking, put the positive to the back of the alternator as the alt cable will be man enough to conduct the current down to the starter, or connect direct to the starter on TDi engines/soft dash RRC.

Hi, sorry but i dont think that will work...if the main battery is flat you will melt the alt cable wiring as this is no where near heavy enough for cranking the motor and possibly cause a fire
