My son is having problems diagnosing a fault with his 1993 200 tdi 90
He jumped in it the other day to find that he had lost drive to the front axle - when put in gear and the clutch let out it just sat there with the front prop turning and no forward motion
Put the diff lock on and drive was restored - half shaft we both thought, stripped out both half shafts - fine, cv joints - fine, pulled the front diff - fine !
Why have we no drive to the front end ? - any ideas appreciated

I think I may have found the problem - on close inspection the splines on the o/s drive flange are pretty worn, there is noticeable play in it when rotated on the cv joint splines, probably worn enough to "slip" when trying to drive
Wish I had inspected it closer before stripping everything down ! Ho- hum, aint landies fun

If it's got that bad then check very carefullu that you don't need a new CV too. The metal in the CV is that bit harder and the drive flanges aren't expected to last forever so fingers crossed it will be ok, but check.

The cv is fine - the drive flange from the other side fits the splines a treat with no play, IIRC I think we changed both cv's last year some time
Had a poke round the shed and found 6 drive flanges - none of which fit

Figures
I understand they aren't expensive htough, so I'd suggest you do both.
