Can the valve stem seals on a 200 TDi be changed without taking off the head ?

 I was thinking .......if the piston is at tdc then the valve "might not"drop into the cylinder. has anyone done this before ?

Not done it on a LR engine but it can be done in theory.  I once had the tool to do it on a Ford Crossflow, it goes in though the plug hole and has a sort of finger that you manouver onto the valve.  It's also easliy done on a CVH with the same tool.
I guess with the TDi being a flat head then you are correct, the piston will hold the valve almost up to the valve seat and you should be able to then compress the spring and reomve the seat etc.
Again there is a Ford tool for levering the spring seat downwards withou touching the valve stem, you might need an old rocker shaft or something to lever against.

there was a reply to a reader's query in LRO saying it can be done, but it didn't explain how.  It reckoned it is better to take the head off and see what condition the pistons and bore are

I don;t see why it can;t be done, you'd clearly have to make sure that the piston was at the top for each pair of valves you were doing..... sorry if thats obvious....!!

The valve springs are i suspect quite heavily sprung, and would therefore be hard to compress, and sods law states you'd loser at least a couple of collets...... idealy, not down the pushrod tubes!!!

This is the valve spring compressing tool for the pinto engine.  It's not that clear I'm afriad but if you imagine there are 2 blades to it, that hook under the camshaft then each has a crescent shaped pad which bears onto the valve spring seat.  On a Pinto the rockers are secured to a rocker post (which is adjustable) then are located sidewyas on the top of the valve stem also.  For the TDi you'd need to spin the rockers out of the way then refit the rocker shaft I guess.

I dont have a lot of time to spend on the job really.
I suspect the stem seals are leaking on #1 cylinder so i was just going to change them untill i get a bit of time to do the lot and the head gasket.

Yes you can do it
You drop it down to bdc and use compressed air to keep the valves shut
You can buy the tools to do this so you do not have to make them  ;)

i have a tool to do ford cvh engines and it just a rocker but with a fork instead, so it pushs the spring and not the valve.
