Hi to all in the know, after a weekend at manby and going through the mud run, my disco has decided to over heat , i've flushed and cleaned my rad which to be honest was in a complete state, but it still persist, there is no sign of water in the oil and the water bottle is being over pressured, as i'm no mechanic and my best tool is a sledge hammer i have no idea where to start to look, any help would be much appreciated,
thx Jav.

Still havent sorted it the mate,Sorry i shouldnt have egged you on to go through tne mud run sorry..
Is the rad clear from all that mud??
Are any fins damaged on the rad??
Cheers Gav
-
I would think about damaged fins, sad to say - they are incredibly delicate. I'm guessing that you're not losing coolant, but the temp gauge is going up?
-
there's a few damaged, but no more than you'd get from a vehicle of that age an its totaly clear of mud, looks like a bit of tape aint fixing this one , oh an i forgot to say that it's started puffing out some smoke from the exhaust but i put that down to burning more oil, but not sure.
-
have u washed the rad out from the front and the back ???
 only ask cos i had the same i had cleaned the rad a treat from the front but all i had managed to do was wash it to the back and pack it nicely in undo the 2 bolts and gently move it forward to check :-k solved mine overheating str8 away
hope that helps
keith

i took the rad out completely an jetted it down several times from both sides

 jetted ?
-
yes i jet washed it down from about a meter away, no damage was caused from the wash
-
is there pressure from the expansion tank >?
could be head gasket's gone :'(
-
IF IT'S PRESSURISING THE WATER BOTTLE THEN THE LIKELY HOD IS THAT IT'S DONE THE HEAD GASKET BETWEEN A WATER WAY & A CYCLINDER, IS IT SMOKING WHITE WHEN YOU FIRST START IT IT OR IS IT WHEN IT'S RUNNING? ANOTHER WAY TO CHECK IS REMOVE THE PLUG'S (GLOW / SPARK) & GET SOME ONE TO TURN IT OVER WHILE YOU'R LOOKING AT THE HOLES TO SEE IF YOU'R GETTING WATER COMING OUT OF THEM ( NOT GOOD).
-
   just give me a straight forward 4 stroke series
-
oil cooler clean :-k or airlock somewhere maybe . try flushing engine oil as well
-
Ours did exactly the same last year at manby, I took the rad out and cleaned it with a hose, there was loads of **** came out, some of it like fired clay!! Didint help the over heating, the rad looked the same as it did before I played in the mud, ie, some poor fins but no worse.
After that it only overheated if I went over 50mph.
I fitted a new rad and it solved it!
-
have ya checked the viscous fan ,sometimes these fail to work properly once subjected to a dunking ,also check it running without the expansion cap on and see if it's bubbling in there

Hi friutloop I had an overheating problem on the way back for Eastnor, towing caravan up cold slad, but not due to mud running possibly the viscous fan. I thought I would add this as this had not been mentioned yet.
-
high fruity you could have the same problem as i had a few months ago the head gasket had gon between the cylinder and a water way so it didnt give me any sluge in the water just kept cooking the collant and preasurising the header tank
-
hmmm :-k, good job i've just ordered a new one along with new rads, pipes etc , lets just say they got abit trashed while playing in the mud
-
does sound like head gasket , iff you over heated it due to the mud blocking the rad you may have been unlucky enough to blow the head gasket . it was probably on its way out and that was the final push. iff you make up some sort of tool to fit a glow plug set it to firing stroke on that cylinder , lock the engine and pressurise that cylinder. take the cap off the expansion bottle fill to top and iff you see loads of bubbles you will know which cylinder has gone. only sure way withought stripping unless you know a friendly garage with a block test kit . like a sniff test . but that will confirm the h/gasket gone but notr on which cylinder . hope this helps ..alan

Cheers for the offer of help Mark, i'll have it up an running again very soon as my parts are on order now and i've got a number for a local who can do the work for me coz if i have ago i'll likely start bashing it with the sledge in frustration ](*,) , but thx again for the offer, and as for you Gav how did you trash the mighty niva, driving around on 3 wheels again m8

Thx Jav.

check for a drible from a hole under the water pump.. common thing.
also excess play in the water pump..
have you checked the air filter aswell? could have slurped some up or just clogged - common cause of overheating... fuel filter too (runs lean = hotter)
-
Too be honest unless you know its a "new" water pump I'd still a new one in at the same time...Saves having to do it later for what they cost...
Wish I could get down and give you a had Jav but I aint got any time off m8..
Anyhow you'll be pleased to know it looks like Brinkhill has finally killed my fuel tank :(
Soddin thing is leaking now..Hmmm a tank guard is in order me thinks
-
Your always breaking something Jon
Cheers Gav
-
Srry to hear your trucks down m8, mines being treated to new gaskets, rad, oil cooler, pipes, new filters and water pump and timing belt, (i sort of forgot to get a new T/ stat), well lets just say almost eveything apart from the engine , Just have to give a big thanks to discoviv8 from northants 4x4 for doing the work for me or i'd still be posting this next year
-
I take it the Disco is alive again then Jav..??
Glad to see you've got it all sorted.
