was talking to a mate at college whod had some problems with his defender, and he reckons his 300tdi has a ECU. i thought that the 300 didnt have an ECU like normal cars. is this the case? he also said it was the same device as what is connected to the EGR, which i dont have. could it be because mine is an older model, so the ECU was added later on.
cheers

it has an ECU for the EGR & thats it
-
some export 300tdi and automatic gearbox 300tdi models had a flyby wire injection pump which would have full blown engine management beyond the normal EGR giblets.

for a start you dont get 300tdi auto defenders,
the only 300tdi autos were discos & the only ecu you will find on a defender 300tdi s for the EGR

Yep my bad, I was wrong to relate to defender sorry, was just basing on notes taken for injector pump part no's found on the 300tdi engines when I was looking for a donor.

It is only the last 3 years of 300Tdi thats got the EGR ECU's (96, 97 and 98). The very last ones has throttle position sensors and all sorts of minor electronic gatgets. Looks like they were getting ready for the Td5 era.
To answer the question, it is almost certain that a P reg will at least have the EGR ECU with the little box fitted under the middle front seat (or the cubby if fitted)
