Since my accident in February i have only driven my series 2a a couple of times due to the amount of effort it takes steering the old boat as my back really hurts afterwards for 2-3 days. How big a job is it to fit power steering, does anyone do kits or has anyone local to me done one and wouldn't mind giving me a hand to convert mine?.

There are ways/kits somewhere to do it! one of the military machines that served in Ireland had it as standard as well. A couple of years ago there was a company at the LRW show that were selling a kit as well! Try an internet search?

For the cost of just that kit you could buy an early 90. Some of the prices on series stuff astounds me.

Depends on how much fabrication you want to do, but my ex-boss & myself converted his 86" Series One to power steering from an early Range Rover.
The front crossmember needs removing to mount the steering box & then a new crossmember needs fabricating to fit around the steering box. The steering column was changed for a Range Rover one, the inner wing needs cutting / modifing, The steering linkage with the UJ's linking the column to the box will need cutting / shortening & welding. A bracket will need fabricating or sourcing for mounting the PAS pump. There's probably more things to do, but I've forgotten.

bit expensive that kit-nearly as much as my landy cost in the first place!!!!!.
-
That looks like the kit Chris Perfect used to sell - even the blurb reads the same.
And twice what I paid for my 2A

are you sure your steering is set up correctly?
i've just played with mine over the weekend, and its now almost a joy to steer, almost as light as the vans i drive at work, which have PAS!
things to check:
what tyres are you running?
are they inflated correctly?
preload on the swivels
oil in the steering box
oil in the relay
change all the ball joints, all 6 of them

mot due at weekend and having to get my mate to take it for me as i cant drive it at the moment then i will have to find someone local with a bit more knowledge of landys than me to give me a hand sorting any volunteers?. Cant wait till my back is better.

Mine will have pas fitted this year. Might not make financial sense but will make it a whole different beast to drive and they are money pits anyway both of them probably owe me more than they are worth.......

Give Sollihull Mick a pm and see what he can do. I can guarantee he can do something much more proffesional than the crappy Chris Perfect example of power steering.

after occasionally driving my mates discovery, i much prefer the steering in my series 3
i find the PAS to be far too light.
just to add, when i was 14 i fractured one of my vertibrae, thankfully it healed, but as i hadnt stopped growing at that time its now deformed and gives me lots of pain
my landrover is about the only vehicle i have driven that doesnt make it hurt more!
