can i just swop the mounts on the axles and the chassis and put coils on?
would the chassis have to be strengthend at all?

firstly NOOOOO coils are for big girls! secondly beefing up chassis near definately a must and attaching mounts, then you've got to mount radius arms etc and changing axle mounts not a small job! there was a phase with series of putting coils on the rear by cutting rear springs off between the axle and rear mounts so they act as radius arms and then fitting springs. what you running now? set of paras can make a good difference!

It has been done but its not simple. A leaf sprung chassis is designed to take the load at 8 point (one each end of every spring) A coil chassis takes the load at only 4 points. So yes it will need strengthening. Next problem is radius arms and panard rods. Forget the usual LR rear Y frame set up as you wont have a crossmember to bolt it to. So use front radius arms with panard rods front and rear. You will then find (on a SWB anyway) that the fuel tank gets in the way of the front RH radius arm, and the bulkhead outriggers get in the way of both. Not impossible to fabricate a new tank, and modify the outriggers, but again a lot of work.
I Would just fit parabolic leaf springs.

You'll also have to 'Q' plate it and go for an SVA test, as the chassis has been modified .

In days of old it made sense but sadly most tax exempt coilers are very dodgy these days and coilers are much cheaper to buy than they were anyway....... Personally I have one of each and wouldn't swap either one.

You are right about most tax exempt coilers being dodgy, one of my favorite sports is asking awkward questions when they come up for sale on Ebay. However if someone is determined to do it it can be an interesting engineering project with satisfying results.

Id neva change my leaf springs! can get a lot of movement out of them if there good! even standard springs if soak in oil and work it in!

ive desided to "modify" the range rover i have, for the coil lover in me and keep my leafer standard.
the good old bounce of the series II makes me smile even when im in a real grumpy mood!!! im keepeing the springs standard but gonna keep them well looobed to hopefully get as much travel as possible.
what longer shocks do people recomend?
