Post by: benbenukuk on March 30, 2008, 16:07:49
I put on a new solenoid for my winch today put everything on how it was on the other one turned on the power to the winch only to find that the winch is going in by it's self!! then to make matters worse it starts to smoke from the live battery terminal and the live feed to the winch also the leads were hot, any ideas?  Ben

Just been out to have a look at it and found out that two wires were touching each other, they were moved and now the winch isn't doing anything

I know nothing about winches, but that sounds like an earthing problem to me?

Regarding it doing nothing now? is it fused?

Not much of a winch expert either, but all the ones I've seen don't come with inbuilt fuses.

Does you vehicle still start? having short circuited the battery enough to get it smoking you may have damaged it beyond use. Check you haven't melted the insulation on any of the cables as well.

It starts fine and the light is still green on the battery, I will have to check the leads to the winch and let you know.  Ben
