Title: TD5 Under bonnet fluid leak, help identify please!?
Post by: Strong Stuff on March 27, 2008, 20:44:58
Hi all, have recently noticed a small stain on the drive just in front of the front passenger side wheel, when I look from under the bonnet it seems to be around the pipe that is at the highest level from the power steering fluid resevoir ........... is there a known issue with anything in this area at all that any of you wise Gentlemen know about? Give me a clue where to start if there is!

Many thanks.

On the attached photo the leak seems to be where the power steering pipe touches the large pipe to the intercooler..............

Any suggestions much appreciated!

Whilst the cogs get going, again, what colour is the oil stain/oil around the intercooler pipe area?

It would appear that you have a leak on one of the steering pump hose lines.

It could have perished. Being at the height, I would think that the joint has become loose, check and tighten the jubilee clips.

I think this is your problem.  You will probably find that one pipe has worn the other away to the extent where a hole has appeared.  Replace the knackered pipe and then cable tie it out of the way so it doesn't rub on anything.

Looking at mine they don't touch, so something is amiss.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

That does sound most likely, that that pipes are rubbing, am surprised that it is the metal pipe that has worn through though.

This is where I find 47 other problems with my D2 when I start fiddling, you just know it is!  8-[

The pipes are made of cheese, so soft you can't crimp then properly or fit compression fittings.  A little bit of grit held in place by oil and you have a grinding paste that will wear through the metal quite quickly.  The rubber pipe's soft surface halps prevent it getting chaffed.
