Title: Cherokee 2.5TD DIY Servicing Advice
Post by: Cherokee on March 24, 2008, 13:53:09
Hello guys,

Had the new off road toy a couple of weeks now, took the time to have a general look at possible future issues if not serviced and what to service...!

How easy is DIY servicing on the above model, i.e need to change oil and filter, air filter, plugs and replace coolant and poss fuel filter/diff oil checks..? as no service history so do not know when last service was done and if i am off roading in it a lot, i want to make sure it is well serviced on the basics.

Or should I just get a local mechanic/garage to do a first baseline service of all service items then pickup myself therafter..?

thanks in advance

It's very easy to do :D - also there is no need to jack it up to get under it.

You will not need any plugs - it's a diesel

Also don't forget to grease all of the nipples :)

thanks for that...Is it worth doing the coolant as well in case of cylinder head problems...?

Was going to put new plugs in took a couple of turn overs this morning, I had to tighten injectors as I had a diesel leak after my off road antics......so I will see how it starts next time and if all is okay will just do all the filters and oil ..!

Bein an ex landy man im not sure but i think that the diesel xj,s have a tendency to destroy head gaskets so its very worthwhile to make sure your cooling system is in top fettle, cos itll be mega bucks if your headgaskets go and i think?theres four?heads on a diesel xj,but dont quote me

Reverse flush the coolant, shove some cleaner in it and do it again.  Then get some good antifreeze/inhibitor in.

The glow plugs will probably not need doing - hopefully [-o< - especially if a mk 1 (they are a pain to get at).
