Title: Diff.ratios in relation to tyre size-or vice versa
Post by: Roc'N'Roll on March 14, 2008, 15:48:25
Eggheads needed!!! :)
Just found out my diff.ratios are 4.874 and not 4.3 :) :) :)
I bought 31" muds but now want to get either 33s or 35s
Question- sure can manage 33s but will engine torque/diff.ratio handle 35s?
Engine is 2.2 diesel non-turbo 47 Kw DIN/HP 64@4000rpm
Is there a math equation?
Help anybody??
Also do I get fat 12.5- or thinner 10.5?
Any help appreciated :D

Depends how much spare power you think you have.  It's not a simple matter of doing the maths on the rolling radius (diameter) of the tyre and comparing final drive ratios, the bigger tyres also take more turning and can lead to very poor on-road performance and pretty dire off road too once the rims are full of mud.

It's why sports cars have low profile alloy wheels, to limit the amountof mass they have to spin up.
