Post by: Tommo on February 25, 2008, 18:30:51
so ive got a 300 tdi ABS disco rear axle for me 90 and its got the wakky alien 3 pronged flange on which i assume you can swap for a normal one. but how do i get it off? no nut so is there a dust cap or summot? there is a centre spigot that must come off some how to reveal a nut.

It must come off otherwise how would you change the seal???

I have just changed the flange on my 300tdi and replaced the the doughnut with a u/j prop and 4 bolt flange from a 200tdi. Removing the center prop alignment plug was a bit was a problem but there is a threaded hole in the center of the plug which I screwed a length of threaded bar into and made a simple puller from a piece of flat metal plate about 10 cm long, drilled a hole in the middle and put this over the threaded bar, put a spacer either side under the bar, (on the axel case) screw a nut onto the bar and gradually tighten, this should pull the plug thingy out!! It worked OK for me.

Good luck.

Or very delicate use of LR special tool#2, the angry grinder.

Hi

The only reason is that with a 2" lift and doing some serious off roading the rubber doughnut has a life expectancy of just a few weeks and cost about £30 to change, the 200tdi prop has a universal joint and is a worthwhile modification recommended by many of the guys on Mud Club.

I also think that a lot of people dislike the rubber doughnut because they have had bad experiences with them, breaking up when nearly new and bad vibrations.  Ironically it's often down to the fact that the centre spigot get neglected when the doughnut is changed.  If you see chafing on the face of the doughnut then the spigot is goosed.
