Post by: burgerman on February 16, 2008, 14:48:22
Hi all, My alternater is charging @ nearly 20 volts on tickover , And not much less with everything turned on, Is it time for a" new" alternater? or is there a bit of it that can be replaced??  Im guessing tha battery will be goosed also due to over charging ??

Anyone got one lying around   :-k
I can source a new battery at a good price ;)

Lucky is the word, it's probably boiled dry with that much overcharging.

Good news is the coils in your alternator are fine ;) but the regualtor has gone up the spout and/or there is a short to the field coil, so it needs a rebuild/reconditioning.

Easier to get an exchange unit with a guarantee.
