i read somewhere that these become non-operational when you fit a lift kit, so would it be legal mot wise to remove it?and would it affect the handling? :?

Yoou're right, it doesn't work which is why the rear springs are often very uprated. You can safely remove it, Discos never had one in the first place, and save a little weight. Just make sure your brake hose can stand the stretch if you lift it or jump anything!
Our is still fitted BTW, it does no harm.

my range did not have one and never had a problem

What if I wanted to remove the self leveling unit and keep my motor standard height. Its sitting low at the rear at the moment and I was going to get another SLU of a mate who is bobtailing and doesn't want his.
But reading the above could I do away with the SLU alltogether.
I will be towing a 21 foot caravan so should I go for the uprated springs like the ones on MM 4X4 web page.
Cheers
