Hi folks does anyone know how i can wire up my light bar  ( 4 spots 55w each ) so that when i have my side lights on they are half power or quarter power just a glow really like marker lights and then when i flash the beam i want them on full power :-k .I could go down the route of drilling the lamps and putting side lights in each one with the small 501 bulbs but you have the problem of sealing it and drilling the reflector  does anyone know how i could do this :? all ideas welcome i don't mind experimenting
-
yes there called Angel eye lamps.

Look here

:-k hmm slight problem i have the square lamps

some vehicle have a unit that is like a resistor that when on side lights it puts headlights on 30%
cant remember what vehicle but i know i ripped then out as they was failty causing the lights to be on full all the time
FIAT (Punto, Cinquento) Pugeot (206, 306 I think) Renault and Citroen aswell as they are the same things
-
led s and clear mastic ? less power drain and can use small gague wiring?
(not done it, just tossing ideas in the pot  )
Thinking now that not a bad idea :help:

Hi ben this is exactly what i was thinking of :) getting hold of a second hand dim dip relay and trying to wire that in some how :-k

My rover has one ;) but that, I think, would require 2 feeds 1 side lights, 1 high beam, with a diode to stop them from using both feeds at the same time
-
And mine :D most people end up taking them off because they cause so many problems  2 feeds i don't mind and diodes are not a problem i think we could be on to something here guys :) does anyone have a spare one going [-o<
-
i might have one on a scrap car (dont know if it works)
might be a couple of cars in the scap yard with one on

A) it's illegal
B) running Halogen bulbs at less than their rated voltage will seriously shorten their life.
But yes it's possible, you need to wire them parallel/series, that way they will be 12v/6v.
-
Its possible, but as mentioned, legality is questionable.
1R wirewound resistor of at least 50W with heatsink grease and bolted to the bodywork will do it. Needs to be wired to a relay on sidelights/main beam, easiest way would be a changeover realy. When sidelights are on the lights are powered through the resistor, when off, they are connected directly. The resistor WILL get bloody hot so it must be bonded.
-
A) it's illegal
NOt for additional spots it isn't

someone else came up with that idea but it looked like there would be alot of wiring up on light bar and they did not sound convinced that it would work well :?

I think you will find that "ROOF" mounted spotlamps are NOT legal for use on the road..
something to do with construction and use regs and driving lamp hights etc
theres nothing saying you cannot install them but you may not have them lit
on a public highway.
they are however perfectly exceptable for use off road.
-
they dont fail them on MOT's and i didnt get done the other day when i flashed a Police Officer [-X [-X

If you consult the fitting instructions on any RING product it states quite clearly that additional marker lights (sidelights, like the angle eyes) are only legal in Germany, in the UK we are allowed one pair of sidelights and one pair of dipped beams. In addition we are allowed 6 lamps to be illumintaed at any one time for our main beam.
-
I think the question of legality regarding using roof lights on the road has come up before. IIRC the general opinion was that they were legal, so long as they didn't cause a nuisance to other road users and were wired so as to come on with full beam. If you think about it there are snowploughs out there with lights at a similar height (to clear the plough blade) so it shouldn't be a problem, just don't dazzle anyone!

there,s a few more than 8 lights on this and they all light up with side lights?

That maybe so. But the Op was asking about Roof lights which are classed as additional spotlamps not sidelamps.

I thought he wanted both :? :? (side lights inside the spots)
Either way just put them on a switch and turn them off if any questions are asked Give it the 'sorry officer they are for offroad use and i must have forgot to turn them off :^o :^o '

I do but still haven't worked out which way to do it :? i am liking the idea of playing with a dim dip unit and see what i can come up with :-k

Aye he did but because they are not at the sides of the vehicle they are classed as additional lamps by fitting two bulbs to each lamp it just gives him variable brightness. no different from having two spots with 55w and 2 with 100w bulbs. And as you say technically they're not for road use so don't class as side lamps on that score either.

"so that when i have my side lights on they are half power or quarter power just a glow really like marker lights " is what he wrote

I read it as meaning that when his side lamps were on the spots would be on half or quarter power. If I assumed rightly then what he would have would be, his side lights on and what amounts to very dim spotlamps on the roof. There nothing in the regs that say the lights have to be bright. Whether having them illuminated at all, on a road is legal or not is a different question altogether! but one he can easily circumvent by having all the lamps switched independantly of the vehicles lighting.

I think we are going round in circles here, so at the the risk of repeatring myself
It's illegal
It will result in premature failure of the bulbs
and yes it is possible
