Hi everyone,
The alternator on my P38 is starting to die on me, dim dash lights, HeVAC blower motor speed increases when revs are applied etc etc.
Before I go and spend tonnes on a new one, Ive been told you can actually repair worn alternators?? If this is the case can anyone recommend a place in Northampton where I could get this done?? I have no problems with getting the alternator off the vehicle myself so I could just take it along and leave it with them etc but how long does this take and is it worth doing or should I just shell out for a new one??
Thanks

Start with the Yellowpages, try an auto electrician or ask in your local motor factors if they can recomend one.

Will,
Try checking the brush pack mounted at the back of the alternator (assuming it's similar to the Disco 1). If the brushes are worn down it can reduce the pressure they exert on the spinning copper conductor causing problems with charging etc. It may be a cheaper quicker fix than the cost of gettting it rebuilt.

Before you take it off give the back of the casing a gentle tap with a hammer.
This will loosen & dislodge any crud stopping the alternator working properly.
Worth a go before you get it changed :D

Yours will be the serpentine engine won't it :-k
In which case you should find the late RRC SE had a similar alternator, though it only has 3 mounting lugs IIRC all the guts are the same.

Try bedford battery NN5 7AY they have a test rig in the back of the shop ,will tell you if repairable or not ,i took my defender alternator there and they fitted new brushes/regulator for £15,top place.
