I was wondering 2 things. A; would a rear spare wheel carrier be able to be fitted to the bonnet of a disco to be similar to old series landies and B; what would it look like? cool or rubbish and could I actualy see over it?
anyone else done this?
-
Can't help but I have wondered myself! :-$ :-k
Though as the rear carrier provides some stand off from the rear door I'd consider using something like a series spare wheel carrier... oh... and I'd beef up the bonnet too!
Maybe one of the AV whizzes could mock up a photoshop for us?! [-o<

I did think about the stand off factor. I dont think I need to leave room for a windscreen wiper to go on the bonnett
This is why I was wondering if I could see over the top to drive!
The bonnet kind of holds my weight when I climb on it to get on the roof. It does go pop but that is about it, it doesnt dent and I am 60kg. a wheel would be less I hope.
-
A number of issues here....
Could you see over it......., depends upon your height!!!!
The weight...., the bonnet will hold the weight...., but not sure if you could lift the bonnet with the wheel on or if the bonnet prop would be able to hold it up...., for long.....
-
I suspect lifting the bonnet with the wheel on would become a job for Arnie. The bonnet on a Series is a fair bit smaller than that on a Disco (and the wheels/tyres tend to be thinner and lighter). Quite apart from the effect the extra weight might have on the bonnet and the fixings for it. Also consider your handling - it would be another noticable load of kilos on top of the engine rather than having it at the back which (I suspect) helps to balance the car.
-
Personally I love the spare wheel on the bonnet. Both my 90 & 110 have them on. Purely for the fact that I tow stuff regularly & can't get to the towbar with the wheels on the back door
I may fit a carrier to a disco bonnet I have just to see how it looks :afro:
-
I'd thought of doing it too, but I think the weight precludes it, the bonnet won't hold it and the bonnet prop certainly won't.
-
What if one was too put gas struts in to help lift the bonnet up say from a Chinckwiichento (and I know that is spelt very poorly!!!)
that would take the load off the bonnet support and arms to lift it!
I quiet fancy doing this anyway, but thats another thread! :D

ewwwwwwwwww lol noooooo

Theres a thread running about Camel trophy Discos - I would have thought that if it was practical to do, then those would have been the folk to do it. I reckon its a none starter due to the bonnet's strength and visibility over the thing once fitted. The bonnet of my 300TDi is close to the engine and I reckon the weight of one of my WOLF rims and BFG's on it and I'd be snapping injector pipes like its going out of fashion - the very reason why Mil WOLF don't have the wheel on the bonnet any longer.......
If you want/need to move the wheel that badly, why not go for a front bumper/bull-bar mount like on SNATCH?.........
Besides, it'll just look odd.
-
I had a wee play with Photoshop on an old photo of my disco........... :-k
-
I did it on a RRC - sorry no photos.
It's bad for so many reasons.....
Looks naff (fine on Defenders and Series though).
Can't see past it - and I'm 6'5".
Makes the bonnet damn heavy.
If you want to get an idea, lift the spare onto the bonnet and step back and stare. Still interested, pop the bonnet and lift it just a few inches to get an idea of the weight. Fancy lifting it all the way up?

Looks naff, you can't beat the look of it on the rear leave it there my friend! [-X

Then tell the anti4x4 brigade it's a pedestrian airbag

IMHO it would look hideous and totally ruin the looks of the Disco. I had an S3 ex mil 109, which did have it, however there is a recess in the bonnet for the spare, to keep it lower and level. On the Disco, unless you either hammered yourself a recess, or made huge ugly chocks for either side, the wheel will probably wobble as you drove along, as well as being tipped slightly forwards looking odd.
My S3 was on BFG 7.50 Trac Edges (sorry purists) but the spare was a road Michelin as the profile of the tyre made it easier to see over. I'm about 6', and I could drive it on road no problems, but I'd always put it in the back off road as steep ascents and decents usually required use of "The Force" as I could not see where I was going. On the few occasions the missus drove it, I would have to move it too.
Add the fact that the bonnet will distort, you won't lift the bonnet, and the wheel will no doubt sit and collect mud/leaves/water and corrode, and you will utterly ruin your bonnet paintwork if you do ever actually need to change a wheel, and I reckon you'll agree it's a non-starter!

Bloody hell mate, my shoes weigh more than you :) no wonder your bonnet doesn't protest!

Here is me on my bonnet with a mate and it didnt make any nasty noises. However, when the guy in yellow decided to jump onto the snorkel side there was a wierd noise then though! He said he jumped onto someone bonnet once and his bum burnt as the bonnet short circuited the battery
I will go and put a spare on the bonnet and take a photo.
It isnt something I will take seriously anymore I think. It was just a thought I had after seeing in the for sale section someone had a wheel bracket for sale!

Looks good...what size tyre is that??
-
Standard disco one, 235 / 70 / R16?
-
Now turn the wheel to the right and edge forward a bit...
The amazing dissapearing Rover 600 trick!! :D
-
Instead of on the bonnet what about on the front of the vehicle?
Even better pedestrian airbag
-
i think putting it on the bonnet will restrict your field of view and make it a silly mod to do :afro: :afro:

No no no no no no no no .......no no no ..... no!
its a disco, not a series! you wont be ble to see out of your windscreen, the bonnet, hinges, and stay will be overstressed, (consider the force of wind on the motorway) people will point and laugh as you pass them, it will be awkward to get on and off (unless you have a step up front) and it will leave an awkward void in your rear....
roofrack? in the boot?
also not sure how it makes towing difficult, unless you have very wide tyres!
as for mounting to the bull bar?!! it will look like a flipping canal barge!! got put it where it is for a reason, why create a number of problems to resolve an inconvenience?
but if you really want to, i wont stop you!
-
put it on the gull bar :P
now thats COOL
