Dont bother with it.
Fit a contactor in the engine compartment instead then fit switches inside the cab (and in the grill if your cool) to operate the winch.
No wasting time with remote cables

The thing a lot of people don't consider is "what happens if the line snaps?"

I've seen a berthing cable on a Type 42 Destroyer snap, it buried itself 8 inches into the armour plating of the gun turret

I've also seen a similar cable snap on a Leander class Frigate! It took a head off cleanly!! and still buried itself into steel plate!

Believe me, if a winch cable snaps and is not arrested in some way, the least thing you will worry about is "Lamp guards"!!!

no

plasma is great if you know how to use it,

if you dont it would be the most expensive purchase to get ruined,

no disrespect to either of you but id advise wire to any one new to the winching game

people think you can stick plasma on and its job done
oh no
its a steep learning curve
and, they need looking after, as neglect will destroy it in a matter of months

i agree with what mike says, its not for a 1st time user

I am in the process of fitting a winch in the new year with steel cable. I am new to winching so i have got a steel cable to [!Expletive Deleted!] about with before i even think about plasma . My question is if i fit a winching sail blanket thingy to the wire , where abouts do i put it i.e. near the winch in the middle or near the winch hook. Or could any body share any exsperience on where to buy one from or even better what to make one with.

i use an ARB orange one bought from D44

it slides up & down the rope
if im winching out a section over a road i have it int he middle to warn others that there is a live rope there, any other time i try to have it at the hook end but its 6 n 1/2 dozen its where abouts

ive got two on my cable, got a big chaff guard that spends most of its time at the hook
then ive got the heavy pvc arb sail that mike mentiond
regs state that when crossing a path you must have the sail there to mark the tort line
but when not my sail is usually 2/3rd the cable length from the winch

dan how did it snap and where abouts ?
you got a picture of the broken halfs ?

getting there matty  :D

stone guards are good for the lamps as well if you're chucking ropes / shackles around near the front of the vehicle.

plasma is safer but as mentioned you need to look after it a bit more than steel rope!
(he says with his wrapped round the lamps for months cos the remote for the winch has broken   )
