Have a look and see if you have an alternator drive belt? or has it come off, other than that i'm affraid your alternator has had it.
Rev counter is controlled form the alternator, and as you said you battery was flat thats points towards it not charging.
Hope this helps

is your charging circuit ok,? battery and altenator? also check cables esp the earth.

just a quick update and query. put a volt meter on batt with engine running putting out about 13.70 volts on tick over, slight throttle volts raise, increase revs volts drop. but sometimes they do raise :? .again somtimes rev counter works sometimes not. altenator six monthes old. could it work sometimes and sometimes not. have put extra earth on aswell

Check the brush pack on the back of your alternator... mine died on me and I found the brushes had worn to stubs... I had a spare in the garage and swapping them over did the trick.
Not sure if you can buy them seperately but I'd have thought so and I'd expect for a whole lot less than an alternator!

sounds like the regulator on the alternator is on the way out...
